Filament Storage System
Design Process
Since moving into a new apartment, I decided to refill on a large set of 3D printing colors. This, in turn, required a storage system for my filament, was ultimately to be 3D printed. I knew I wanted to use my vertical space in my apartment, since my room walls are 9-10ft high. I purchased some PVC Pipe from Home Depot to proceed in constructing a storage system for all my filament rolls. Each section consists of a flat plate with holes for filament savings connected to 80mm risers for on each corner insulating the PVC pipes.
When the need came along to track when I opened each roll and track their humidity via drying with the Bambu Lab AMS 2 Pro, I needed a system (preferably physical) to track those dates as well as filament weight. I designed a small index-card sized 3d-printed card (parametrically designed in Fusion360) that is printed in multicolor and has space for a custom-made label from a sticker sheet. That way, the labels are magnetically added to the horizontal plates holding up each filament roll.
Reflection & Improvements
In writing this and reflecting on this project, there is always improvements to be made; many of these will be a gradual improvement process, however, the initial release of the project is coming to a close for me. Here is a future improvement list
- The magnetic labels require removal before accessing filament. While this enforces accountability, this is not ideal for quick color swaps.
- In adding a plethora of screws, the PVC pipes are not really… doing anything. They are statically standing surrounding the 3D-printed risers. The goal originally was for towers to be stabilized by the PVC pipe, however, design issues swayed me away for this. I would like to redesign eventually to stabilize the core.
- Continuing from the previous bullet, the weight of the filament is causing structural overload to the plates holding the spools. Ideally, this would be resolved via a central pillar that stabilizes the weight (almost all spools have a central bore through them).
- Labels are not easily reusable. I must either white out or use pencil on them to update drying status or weight.
